TOEIC Link Vocabulary — Green Hydrogen Electrolyzer Plant Commissioning and Stack Balance-of-Plant Cluster
Green hydrogen has moved from pilot demonstrations to full industrial buildout, and with the buildout comes a body of English documentation — commissioning procedures, acceptance-test reports, plant-status notices, and vendor correspondence — that TOEIC Link draws on for its technical Part 5, 6, and 7 items. The exam does not test whether you can operate an electrolyzer. It tests whether you can read the sentence a commissioning engineer writes about one, choose the verb or preposition that completes it, and locate a fact buried in a two-page acceptance report. Those tasks reward a candidate who has learned the vocabulary as a workflow with predictable collocations, not as isolated glossary entries.
This cluster follows a hydrogen plant from the electrical front end to the purity specification at the fence line, in the order commissioning actually proceeds. Reading it this way matters: the exam frequently tests the word that names the next step, and a candidate who knows the sequence can anticipate the answer before reading all four options. The electrical front end: rectifier and transformer
A large electrolyzer runs on direct current, but the grid supplies alternating current, so the plant's front end is a rectifier fed by a step-down transformer. The commissioning verbs here are precise. Power is energized to the transformer, the rectifier is ramped up to its rated current, and the DC bus is stabilized before any hydrogen is produced. The verb that governs the stack during commissioning is condition (or break in): the stack is conditioned over a defined period until its voltage settles. A candidate who reads the stack was conditioned for 48 hours before performance data were recorded and understands conditioned as a deliberate break-in step — not a synonym for repaired — will answer the associated inference question correctly.
Balance of plant: separators, coolers, and pumps
Everything around the stack that keeps it running is the balance of plant (BoP), a term the exam uses as-is. The BoP is where most commissioning vocabulary lives, because it is where most of the checkable equipment sits.
- Gas-liquid separator — the vessel that separates produced hydrogen gas from the circulating water. Collocates with level control and carryover (unwanted liquid escaping with the gas).
- Circulation pump — moves electrolyte or feed water through the stack. Commissioning primes the pump and checks it for cavitation.
- Heat exchanger / cooler — removes the heat the reaction generates. The stack must be held within its temperature window; a notice may report that the cooler maintained the outlet temperature at setpoint.
- Feed-water treatment — the polishing step (often deionization or reverse osmosis) that supplies water pure enough for electrolysis. Impurities foul the membrane, so the exam pairs feed water with purity and conductivity.
The BoP vocabulary rewards the same slot-grammar discipline that governs any word-form item: many of these terms appear as noun-noun compounds (level control, feed-water treatment) where the exam tests which noun heads the phrase. The back end: gas purification and the purity specification
Raw hydrogen leaving the separator carries traces of oxygen and water vapor, so the back end purifies it to the contracted specification. Two units dominate the vocabulary.
- Deoxo unit — a catalytic reactor that removes residual oxygen by recombining it with hydrogen into water. The exam pairs deoxo with catalyst and outlet oxygen content.
- Dryer — typically a twin-bed adsorption dryer that removes moisture; the beds regenerate on a cycle. Collocates with dew point, the headline dryness metric.
- Purity specification — the contractual target, e.g. 99.999% (referred to as five-nines). Commissioning verifies that the product gas meets the specification before the plant is handed over.

- Part 7 acceptance reports — a double passage pairing a specification with a measured result, testing whether you can synthesize a fact that appears in neither text alone. This is the same evidence-synthesis skill the exam rewards across every technical domain.
A four-week protocol for technical vocabulary clusters
- Week 1 — sequence. Redraw the plant as a flow: rectifier → stack → separator → cooler → deoxo → dryer → purity spec. Say aloud what each stage does. Sequence knowledge lets you predict the tested word.
- Week 2 — collocations. For each noun, write the two verbs and one preposition it most often travels with (ramp up to, operate at, condition for, meet ... specification). Drill these as chunks, because that is how Part 5 tests them.
- Week 3 — notices. Read one real commissioning or plant-status notice per day and mark every term from this cluster. Practice reading for the state a notice reports (energized, within spec, handed over) rather than word by word.

Technical vocabulary is not memorized fastest as a list; it is memorized fastest as a process you can narrate. A candidate who can walk a hydrogen plant from grid connection to purity certificate in plain English will recognize the tested word before reading the fourth option — and will read the acceptance report at the speed the exam demands.
