A large share of TOEIC Link reading time is lost not on hard vocabulary but on navigation. The reader reaches the end of a paragraph and cannot say what it argued, so they re-read it. They reach a question about the passage's structure — where a contrast begins, which sentence states the main point, what the writer concedes before disagreeing — and they scan the whole text again because they never tracked the shape while reading it the first time. Both problems have the same cause: reading the content words and skipping the connectors that announce how the content fits together.

Signposting words and discourse markers are the writer's own navigation aids. However, for example, in contrast, as a result, first, more importantly — these are not filler. Each one tells the reader in advance what the next stretch of text will do relative to what came before. A reader who tracks them builds a map of the passage as they go, and answers structure and inference questions from the map instead of by re-scanning. A reader who reads past them has only a pile of sentences and must reconstruct the shape every time a question asks about it.

Why the connectors decide navigation questions

TOEIC Link reading passages are built as arguments, not as lists. A business memo states a problem, proposes a response, anticipates an objection, and concludes. An article introduces a claim, supports it with evidence, contrasts it with an alternative, and qualifies it. The relationships between those moves — support, contrast, cause, sequence, concession — are the skeleton of the passage, and the discourse markers are the labels on the skeleton.

Questions exploit readers who ignore the skeleton. An author-purpose question asks why a paragraph appears where it does; the answer is often signaled by the marker that opens it (On the other hand opens a counter-view; For instance opens support). A main-idea question rewards the reader who noticed more importantly or the key point is and stored the sentence it introduced as the priority. An inference question turns on whether a claim was asserted or merely conceded — and the concession marker (although, while it is true that) is the tell.

The four families of markers to track

Contrast and concession. However, in contrast, on the other hand, nevertheless, although, while, yet. These announce a turn — the text is about to qualify, oppose, or overturn what preceded. When you hit one, expect the writer's real position to follow; the concession before it is often not what they believe.

Cause and result. Because, since, as a result, therefore, consequently, which is why. These mark a claim about why something happens or what follows from it. Cause-effect questions live entirely inside these markers, and a distractor often reverses the direction (making the result the cause).

Sequence and addition. First, next, finally, in addition, moreover, furthermore. These stack points in order or pile them up. They tell you a list is running, which matters when a question asks how many reasons the writer gave or what the final step is.

Emphasis and restatement. In fact, indeed, more importantly, in other words, that is. These flag priority or clarify. More importantly ranks what follows above what preceded; in other words says the next clause restates the last, which is exactly what a paraphrase distractor will imitate.

The six navigation traps

Trap 1: reading past the turn. A passage runs "The proposal has clear benefits… however, the costs are substantial." A reader who skims stores "clear benefits" as the point and misses that the however made cost the writer's actual emphasis. The turn word is the most important word in the sentence, not the least.

Trap 2: treating a concession as the position. "While the older system was reliable, the new platform is faster and cheaper." The reliability of the old system is conceded, not endorsed. A question asking what the writer recommends is answered after the while, not inside it.

Trap 3: reversing cause and result. "Sales fell, and as a result the budget was cut." A distractor says the budget cut caused the sales fall. The marker as a result points one way only; readers who logged it reject the reversal instantly.

Trap 4: missing the ranking word. "The plan saves time and, more importantly, reduces risk." A main-idea question rewards risk reduction because more importantly ranked it first. A reader who flattened the sentence gives the two equal weight and picks the time-saving distractor.

Trap 5: mistaking restatement for new information. "The initiative underperformed. In other words, it did not meet its targets." The second sentence adds nothing new; in other words signals restatement. A reader who treats it as a second, separate fact double-counts the evidence and misreads the passage's scope.

Trap 6: losing the list. "First… second… finally…" A question asks for the third step, but the reader never tracked the sequence and must re-scan. The sequence markers are free indexing — tracked once, they answer the question without a second pass.

Reading the connectors first

The practical technique is to give the discourse markers priority attention on the first pass, not equal attention with content words. When you reach a marker, pause for a beat and predict what comes next: a however predicts a turn, a therefore predicts a conclusion, a for example predicts support. The prediction primes the next stretch of text and lets you read it faster, because you already know its job.

This is the same discipline that separates fast readers from slow ones across all long-passage formats: they read the structure signals first and let the structure carry the details, rather than reading every detail flat and reconstructing the structure afterward. The markers are on the page for exactly this purpose. Skipping them is skipping the writer's own instructions for how to read the passage.

The four-week protocol

Week 1 — marker inventory. Take five practice passages. Highlight every discourse marker and label its family (contrast, cause, sequence, emphasis). Do not answer questions yet. The goal is to see how densely the markers are packed and to make noticing them automatic.

Week 2 — predict-then-read. On five new passages, stop at each marker and write a one-word prediction of what follows (turn, support, result, list, restate) before reading on. Check whether the prediction held. This builds the reflex of reading the marker as an instruction, not as a word to pass over.

Week 3 — map from markers. After each passage, without re-reading, sketch its skeleton from memory of the markers alone: claim, support, contrast, conclusion. Then answer the structure and main-idea questions from the sketch. This proves the map is enough and breaks the re-scanning habit.

Week 4 — timed integration. Run full timed sets. Track the markers on the first pass only; answer from the map. Log every miss and classify it against the six traps. Most residual errors cluster in one or two traps — usually reading past the turn or mistaking concession for position — and targeted attention there closes the gap fast.

What changes when you track the connectors

A reader who tracks discourse markers stops re-reading. The map built on the first pass answers the structure, purpose, and main-idea questions without a second scan, which returns the time those questions used to eat. Inference questions get more reliable because concession and cause markers make the writer's real position explicit instead of leaving it to be guessed. And the confident distractors — the ones that reverse a cause, upgrade a concession, or double-count a restatement — lose their pull, because the marker already ruled them out.

The information was never hidden. The writer labeled every turn, every cause, every priority, and every list. Passage navigation is not a matter of reading harder; it is a matter of reading the labels the writer already wrote.
