A TOEIC Link speaker who pronounces every individual English sound correctly can still be marked down for intelligibility, because the sounds that break down are not the single consonants — they are the clusters, the runs of two, three, and four consonants that English stacks with no vowel between them. Asked ends in three consonants, /skt/. Texts ends in four, /ksts/. Strengths opens with three, /strɛ/, and closes with two more. When a cluster arrives, the speaker takes one of two escape routes: drop a consonant so asked becomes ask, or insert a vowel so it becomes ask-uh-ed — and both routes are audible, both cost points, and both are fixable.

This is one of the most underrated levers in the speaking section. Candidates drill vowel contrasts and individual consonants for months, get them right, and still sound non-native the moment a cluster appears, because the cluster is where the mouth runs out of room and defaults to whatever the first language allows. Fixing clusters does not require learning any new sounds — you already produce /s/, /k/, /t/, and /d/ individually — you are learning to produce them back to back without dropping one or padding the gap. Why consonant clusters are hard

Languages differ enormously in how many consonants they let sit together. Many languages allow only a single consonant before or after a vowel, so a word like strengths — three consonants, a vowel, then four more — has no template in the speaker's first language. Faced with a shape the mouth has never produced, the speaker reaches for the nearest legal shape, and there are only two ways to make an illegal cluster legal: remove a consonant, or add a vowel to break the cluster into separate syllables.

Both repairs are systematic, not random. A speaker whose language forbids final clusters will reliably simplify asked to ask and hand to han. A speaker whose language forbids initial clusters will reliably insert a vowel, turning street into sutoreet and blue into buluu. The repairs are predictable enough that a rater hears them as an accent signature — not one error but a pattern — and a pattern of cluster repair pushes the pronunciation band down because it accumulates across every sentence.

The high-value clusters

You cannot drill every English cluster, but a short list carries most of the intelligibility load in business speech.

Final -ed clusters. The regular past tense stacks a /t/ or /d/ onto whatever consonant precedes it, producing the clusters that get simplified most:

  • /kt/asked, worked, looked, marked, packed
  • /pt/stopped, shipped, developed, helped, shaped
  • /st/passed, based, increased, faced, released
  • /nd/, /ld/, /rd/planned, called, ordered, prepared, required

The default error drops the final stop — ask, stop, pass, call — which erases the past tense entirely and can change meaning, not just accent.

Final -s clusters. Plurals and third-person -s stack onto a final consonant:

  • /ts/reports, contracts, results, costs, markets
  • /ks/tasks, risks, works, checks, tracks
  • /sts/texts, requests, guests, lists, adjusts (three consonants; the middle /t/ is the one that vanishes)

Texts and lists are the signature four- and three-consonant traps; dropping the /t/ gives tex and liss.

Initial clusters with /s/. Str- (street, strategy, structure, strong), spr- (spread, spring), spl- (split), scr- (screen, scratch). These attract epenthesis: an inserted vowel before or inside the cluster.

Two-consonant onsets. Bl-, br-, pl-, pr-, gr-, fl-, fr-, cl-, cr-blue, problem, please, project, program, flight, free, close, create. High frequency, and the inserted vowel (puroblem, kurate) is the most audible cluster error in the initial position.

The four cluster failure modes

Failure 1 — Final consonant deletion

The speaker drops the last consonant of a final cluster: asked to ask, hand to han, texts to tex. This is the costliest failure because deleting the final /t/ or /d/ often deletes grammatical information — tense, plurality, possession — so it is scored twice, once for pronunciation and once for the grammar it erases. The fix is to make the final stop felt, not necessarily loud: a released /t/ with a small puff, or an unreleased /t/ with the tongue actually reaching the ridge, both count; only the missing tongue movement fails.

Failure 2 — Vowel epenthesis (padding the cluster)

The speaker inserts a vowel to break the cluster: street to sutoreet, asked to askuh-ed, blue to buluu. This adds a syllable, and added syllables distort the rhythm the rest of the sentence depends on, so a single padded cluster can throw off the thought-group chunking of a whole phrase. The fix is to co-articulate: start the second consonant while the first is still closing, so there is no gap for a vowel to fill.

Failure 3 — Cluster substitution

The speaker replaces the hard cluster with an easier one — strengths becomes strenks or strent, months becomes munts or muns. This is a hybrid of deletion and simplification and usually targets the /θ/ + /s/ combination, which is genuinely rare across languages. The fix is to slow the word to half speed, produce each consonant separately, then compress; the target is control first, speed second.

Failure 4 — Avoidance

The speaker senses the hard word coming and swaps it for an easier one — saying finished instead of completed, got instead of requested — which protects pronunciation but shrinks the vocabulary range the rubric also scores. Avoidance trades one sub-score for another and caps the ceiling. The fix is to build the clusters so the harder, higher-scoring word is available under pressure.

Why raters weight clusters heavily

Cluster errors are dense and diagnostic. They are dense because clusters appear in the highest-frequency grammatical machinery of English — every regular past tense, every plural, every third-person verb — so a speaker who repairs clusters does it dozens of times per response, and the rater hears the pattern within seconds. They are diagnostic because the specific repair (deletion versus epenthesis) reveals the first-language template, and revealing the template is the definition of a strong accent on the rubric.

They also interact with meaning in a way single-sound errors do not. Mispronouncing a vowel usually leaves the word recognizable; deleting a final cluster consonant can delete tense or number and change what the sentence claims. "We ask the supplier" and "we asked the supplier" differ by one /t/, and a rater who cannot hear the /t/ cannot score the grammar as correct even if the speaker intended the past. Clusters are where pronunciation and grammar are welded together.

The cluster control drill

Work one cluster family at a time over a two-week cycle.

  1. Isolate and slow. Take one family — final /kt/, say — and pull ten words: asked, worked, looked, marked, packed, checked, linked, ranked, thanked, banked. Say each at half speed, deliberately reaching the tongue to the ridge for the final /t/. You are proving the consonant exists before you speed up.

  2. Minimal pairs across the cluster. Contrast the simplified and full forms: ask / asked, look / looked, pack / packed. Record and check that a listener can hear which one you said. If they cannot, the /t/ is not landing.

  3. Cluster in a carrier phrase. Drop each word into a fixed frame — "We asked them yesterday," "They worked on it" — so the cluster sits between other words the way it will in real speech, where the following word's sound often tempts you to drop the /t/.

  4. Epenthesis check on onsets. For initial clusters, record street, strategy, problem, project, please and listen specifically for an inserted vowel. If you hear suh- or puh-, start the two consonants closer together until the vowel disappears.

  5. Read aloud with cluster marking. Take a business paragraph, underline every final -ed, final -s, and initial /s/-cluster, and read it once concentrating only on those marks. Then read it at normal speed and record. The goal is that the clusters survive when your attention moves elsewhere.

The measure of success is not that clusters sound effortful — it is that they sound normal. A controlled cluster is quiet: the /t/ is there, no vowel pads it, and the listener never notices the machinery. That invisibility is exactly what lifts the intelligibility band, because the rater stops hearing an accent signature and starts hearing English.
